Jeanette Lindstrцm is the jazz singer that prompted legendary producer Quincy Jones to voice the portentous words: "An old soul in young singer's body." And also: "She really understands what jazz is all about!"

The year was 1995 and Jeanette Lindstrцm made her major breakthrough - on a broad front. She is first and foremost a jazz singer, but at the same time has never been opposed to stepping outside of the borders of jazz.

The calendar tells us it's now a different year, and Jeanette Lindstrцm is no longer the promising newcomer but one of the most established jazz singers in Sweden. Her CD "Walk" shows that she not adverse to moving on and exploring new territories.

As always, Jeanette Lindstrцm sings with a voice that relies on a tigress' strength, a young woman's longing and a mature woman's sincerity. In other words: a voice with a lightness, an airiness and a touch of earthiness to it.

Together with her musicians, she has created a multi-layered atmosphere on "Walk" in which the delicate and the forceful are blended together just below the boiling point. The tones of a piano, vibraphone and electric guitar alternate and linger throughout all the songs; behind them, the base and drums pulsate with a light touch that leaves room for airiness without losing the driving force. And every now and then a trumpet stands out.

The songs are a journey between different emotions and expressions, yet they are linked together like different entranceways to the same underlying atmosphere. The texts that accompany the melodies capture the ups and downs of life with a few well-chosen words.

She begins with the morning-dreamlike "This Time", followed by the irresistible, captivating title song, "Walk", songs light as a feather and heavy as lead shift to "Trains & Boats & Planes" and move with unhesitating promptness on to "What remains". In "That Sorry School", she combines an echo of Joni Mitchell's sophisticated elegance with a shimmering voyage through space, while in "Where is Wolfgang?" she opens the door to the cabaret theater's mixture of seriousness and humor. It is a variation that her musicians capture time and again. Because Jeanette Lindstrцm doesn't demand all the attention for herself, she leaves room for her musicians in solos that either accentuate or change, but constantly evolve.

With Andy Narell--who's been playing calypso music from Trinidad since he was barely tall enough to reach the pan--it's always been about expanding the role of the steelpan in jazz. Now, with the release of University of Calypso, Narell joins forces with calypso legend Relator to explore the role of jazz in vintage calypso. Together, they perform 15 classic compositions by Lord Kitchener, Lord Melody, Mighty Terror, Roaring Lion, Spider, and Relator, supported by a group of world-class Latin-jazz cats who can swing the calypso and blow le jazz hot. It's been over 50 years since a major calypsonian went into the studio with a bunch of jazz players. This CD is cause for serious celebration!

Following upon the critical successes of The Passage and Tatoom, Narell was invited to present a concert of his steelband music at the Trinidad and Tobago Steelpan and Jazz Festival, playing with the great Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra. While he was on the island, he sat in with Relator at a tribute to Lord Kitchener. "There were four different sets," Narell recalls, "ranging from solo piano to big band and steelband, and everybody played Kitch's music. Relator did a beautiful set with just his guitar and a percussionist, and at one point I heard him say that he had gone to the University of Kitch, and was proud to be one of its best students. I knew that Relator had sung in Kitchener's tent for 17 years, and that they were very close, and that he has a deep understanding of Kitchener's music. I've been playing Kitchener's music since I was a little kid, so the `University of Kitch' really resonated for me. When we decided to record together, I proposed that we call the project `University of Calypso' to capture that feeling that we share."

Narell and Relator also share a deep affection for classic calypso that infuses this session with a unique energy that hasn't been heard in a while. When Relator speaks of being a calypsonian, his passion for the art is clear. "Is a tradition we upholdin'. We know what standards are set, what values, and we stay true to that. We are true servants to de t'ing. We are not mockin' pretenders or exploiters or opportunists lookin' to be popular an' t'ing. We believe that vintage calypso must be preserved, and that is the line that we are on."

Hopefully, University of Calypso will help Narell and Relator bring this marvelous music to a new audience, all year round. "I believe this project has great potential to reach people," says Narell. "The music is so accessible, people can latch on to so many different things--the beautiful melodies, the groove for dancing, the stories told in the lyrics, the humor, the jazz elements, how the band plays together and interacts, the soloing--and on top of it all, we've got an incredibly dynamic guy out front singing these songs, a real storyteller in the great calypso tradition. I wanted to record some of this music right away in order to breathe life into the project and get it off the ground, but the real goal in my mind is to get in front of people and play it live.

For a CD with a lot of soft songs on it--"Scarborough Fair," "Over the Rainbow," "You Are My Sunshine"--Into White sends a loud message, that being: when you're as important an artist as Carly Simon, you can pretty much sing what you want, which accounts for this disc's genre confusion. Part kids' record, part under-the-covers project, Into White feels a little like it went for a toss in the Simon residence's salad spinner; "Oh! Susanna," which has rarely sounded sweeter, is followed by a beautiful reading of the Beatles' poetic "Blackbird," which segues into a family sing-along to ex-husband James Taylor's classic "You Can Close Your Eyes" (son and daughter Ben and Sally Taylor pitch in on harmonies). Deciding whether to play it on the way to morning kindergarten or during brunch for your mellow sweetheart, then, can be brutal. But the choice to buy it or bypass it shouldn't be. Simon, vocally sure-footed as ever, wicks the warmth out of every last track and directs it with pinpoint precision to her listeners--nobody does music as comfort food better. Caroline Hendersons 9th solo album “Keeper of the Flame” is released on the 26th of October 2009. The album picks up from her previous release “No. 8″, which received brilliant reviews and sold more than 30.000 copies.
